Fort Sam Houston is home to the command headquarters of the United States Army North, the United States Army South, the Army Medical Command headquarters and the Navy Regional Recruiting. It is commonly referred to as the “Home of Army Medicine”. The host wing at Fort Sam Houston is the 502nd Air Base Wing In October of 2010; Fort Sam Houston joined Lackland and Randolph Air Force Base to become Joint Base San Antonio under the Air Force administration. San Antonio has many school districts available, and students will attend the school district applicable to where they reside. No bus service is provided for students who live on post at Fort Sam Houston. There are numerous magnet schools as well as business career high schools in the Northside Independent School District. The Fort Sam Houston Development Center offers programs for children between six weeks and five years of age. The center can be reached Monday through Friday at 210-221-4058. School Age services are also offered and include an open recreation program, seasonal camps, and before and after school care.
Military personnel seeking on-post housing must fill out an application at the Housing Office at Fort Sam Houston. The office is located in Building 367 Stanley Rd. Those personnel filling out a housing application will be placed on a waiting list. For off-post housing, personnel can contact the Fort Sam Houston Family Housing LP who will notify the family when a residence becomes available. When the leave begins, that will trigger the start of the applicable BAH rate. The cost of living in San Antonio is much lower than other large U.S. cities for homes for sale or rent are available at reasonable prices. Temporary lodging is available through the guest facilities located in Building 3625. Each guest house has central air and heat and is equipped with laundry and kitchen facilities. Active duty military of all grades with or without dependents and departing PCS personnel are authorized to use the facilities s well as relatives and guests with patients in the nearby military hospitals.
